In school we learn that mistakes are bad, and we are punished for making them. Yet, if you look at the way humans are designed to learn, we learn by making mistakes. We learn to walk by falling down. If we never fell down, we would never walk.

It’s okay not to answer the phone. It’s perfectly fine not to reply to the text messages or to leave e-mails unanswered. It’s okay to decline the invitation to a party where all you’ll see are familiar faces and unfamiliar eyes. It’s okay not to hang out with your friends on a Saturday night because you prefer to spend the evening watching reruns of your shows. It’s okay if sometimes you feel like being by yourself is when you feel you’re being the most ‘you’. What you feel isn’t completely valid but it is necessary because sometimes people just smother you. And you need to give yourself space to breathe. You owe it to yourself.

And most of these things weren’t the kind that made me think, Oh, I’ve got to write this down. It was all I could do to open my eyes in the strong headwind, catch my breath, and forge ahead.
